Release Blitz: Respect by Aleatha Romig

Respect - An Infidelity Stand-alone Novel “The making of a man” Standing at what I believe is the precipice of my life, I, Oren Demetri, was too young to understand that it wasn’t and too old to imagine that it couldn’t be. The already hefty accumulation of my successes and failures, bravery and fears, and rewards and suffering, had brought me to this point. It was hard to contemplate the things I’d done, and yet, in reality I’d only begun to learn the possibilities.   I suppose that’s how it was for me at twenty-nine years of age on the brink of all I’d ever wanted without fully realizing the price I would pay. Yet in that moment, I knew there would be no cost too great or sacrifice I wouldn’t make. I had no idea how far-reaching that moment of self-discovery would be; because as the congregation’s murmurs quieted, bleeding into silence and allowing the thump of my heart to be the only sound I heard, I was a man filled with love and adoration, emotions in stark contrast to those I needed in the world I’d built or the one I was about to enter. Angelina Costello was my dream and now my reality. I’d worked diligently to move beyond the actuality of being a dockworker’s son to becoming a self-made, successful entrepreneur, all in an effort to earn the right to call her my own. I’d overcome servitude to others, collecting their paychecks and lowly praises, to being the one who signed the paychecks and offered the accolades when they were rightfully earned. The world was my oyster and walking toward me on the arm of her uncle was my pearl. I’d found her amongst the empty shells life had offered. There was no need to pry open another possibility. Angelina was all I wanted. Yet my path was uncharted. There was more for me to earn, lose, and willingly give. The top of that list was respect. This stand-alone novel may be read without reading the Infidelity series. From New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and USA Today bestselling author Aleatha Romig comes a stand-alone novel based from her beloved Infidelity series. With classic Aleatha Romig twists, turns, deceptions, and devotions, this new epic romantic thriller will delve into a world where family takes on new meaning and even the inhabitants are suspicious of the next chapter.   Have you been Aleatha'd? Last Breath Excerpts
Julia
Every year as summer faded into fall and fall approached winter; Julia would find herself watching the calendar with dread. She knew that as November approached, she would once more have to face the remainder of her life’s greatest tragedy. The day served as a bitter memento of what Julia had lost seventeen years before. What made the anniversary even worse, if that was possible, was the fact that she could not confide in her husband the agony she felt. Joe, her husband, did not share in her grief and considered the events surrounding that fateful day to be a part of her life before him. While she wanted to be held by him and consoled as she worked through the agony of her loss, Joe treated it all as a distant anecdote in their lives that had no bearing on life today. In Joe’s eyes, the time Julia spent mourning the loss of her first child was her way of continuing to mourn for the life she once had. Sitting in her office that morning, Julia stared at the bouquet of baby pink roses that had just arrived. She received the exact same flowers every year on this day. They came from the same florist and were always sent by the same man. The trouble was that these flowers never came from her husband, Joe. They came from Dean Edwards. Julia was a rare beauty. She had an olive complexion just like her father’s and dark brown hair accented by mocha brown eyes. While she only stood 5 feet and 3 inches, Julia had no problem standing out in a crowd. Besides her obvious beauty, Julia was a kind-hearted woman with a warm and caring personality. She loved the people in her life immensely and worked hard in each of her relationships. She was an excellent boss, a trusted friend, dedicated wife, and mother. It was her ambition to serve as a model for other people and to treat them, as she would want to be treated. As Julia looked up from the flowers before her, she noticed her business partner, Len Edwards, waving to get her attention. This man was like a second father to Julia. “Hey Jules, mind if I come in for a second? I see Joe sent you some flowers. That man sure has a way with making you feel special, wouldn’t you say?” Len didn’t know the flowers were actually a gift from his son Dean and not Julia’s husband. Smiling warmly at Len, she did her best to ignore the compliment about her husband the same way she was trying to ignore the roses sitting on her desk. “Hey Len, come in. I’m glad you’re here. I need to take off early today. I have some personal stuff that I can’t keep putting off. Mary Beth will be here though, and she can take care of anything that comes up.” Julia Hudson and Len Edwards had been in business together for the past nine years. They ran a very successful marketing firm that had grown from a small independent company into one of national prominence. Their success was due to a shared commitment to core values of honesty and integrity. “You okay, Jules?” Julia understood that Len had always looked at her as an unofficial daughter and worried about her. This fact was less than surprising given how long Julia had been a friend with Len’s own children along with the amount of time they had all spent in the company of one another. Like many who had known Julia for years, Len could see that she had lost the spark that had once been in her eyes. He knew that life at home was hard for her and had been for some time. In truth, the spark had started to fade seventeen years prior when Julia had mysteriously broken off her engagement to Dean. She had regained some of that spark back two years later when she met Joe, her husband today. The trouble was that in the past five years, it had started to fade again. “Oh, yes, um, sorry to just leave like this. I have the Laney Farms contracts ready for signatures. Mary Beth will come get you when they arrive for the 2:30 meeting. She’s lead on this contract, but it may help if you are there as well.” She was distracted, grabbing her keys, pocketbook and flowers. She tried her best to make it to her car before she fell apart. If it hadn’t been for this important contract, she would have never even attempted to come in at all today. The flowers were not the only routine event she followed when this day arrived each year. It was a standing custom that Julia and Dean would arrive at the cemetery around the same time. Julia knew that the roses she received were never for her, but were a clear indicator that the fateful day had once more arrived.
Dean
Opening his eyes, Dean began to register the sound of sirens in the distance. His hand was still on Julia’s knee. “Jules, can you hear me?” Dean yelled. He saw paramedics trying to open the doors to the car and somewhat heard them calling out to him. Feeling as if he were having an out of body experience, it started to dawn on him what had happened. The paramedics were trying to talk to Julia, but she wasn’t answering. Dean became frantic, “My fiancé! She is pregnant! Please help her! Julia! Answer me!” “Sir, how far along is she?” “Around 30 weeks.” Hearing the paramedics talking to one another, his heart seemed to stop beating. “This one is in shock and we need to get him out of here. How is the girl?” All of a sudden, they broke glass and a fireman yelled out, “She has a pulse, but she needs help soon” “Get her out of there! Take care of her first! Please!” Dean yelled. He heard the twisting sound of snapping metal as the Jaws of Life opened the door. “Sir, we are doing all we can for your fiancé. As soon as we get her out she is going to the hospital. Who is her doctor?” “Chow is her doctor's name. Please take care of her! Her and the baby are my everything.” This was the last thing Dean remembered before things went black. The next thing Dean knew, he was being wheeled on a gurney into the hospital. He had blacked out while the firemen were trying to get Julia out of the wreckage of their car. Hearing Julia screaming, he needed to get to her but he was hooked up to an I V. “No, I don’t want them called! Don’t call them!” It was all he could hear.
Joe
It took Joe by surprise when someone knocked on his door but excited to see it was Julia. “Jules, what a surprise. I didn’t know you would be in town today. I thought you had an errand near Raleigh. But, I’m so glad to see you.” He said as he pulled her close to him and gave her a kiss. “That’s true. I had to see to something in Raleigh but I’m back now. I guess I just needed to see your face too.” She said, wrapping her arms around his waist. “Come on in, stay a while.” He said to her. “I’m not imposing, am I?” She asked. He swung her into the apartment and onto his couch. Sitting down next to her he simply said, “You are my bright spot. I would be with you all the time if I didn’t think you would tire of me. Jules, I think I love you. I know that sounds too soon but I know. That is the best way I can describe it. As a matter of fact, you can stop by whenever you want and if for some reason I’m not home, use my spare key and let yourself in,” he said as he walked over to his keys and took the spare off for her. “I think coming home to you here is the best surprise I could have in my day.” She was stunned by this revelation. “You love me?” Joe was afraid he would have scared her away with this piece of information. “Yes, Jules, you make me a better version of myself. I want time to get to know you but I have a feeling we will one day grow old together, that is my hope anyway. I want to be the man you trust and love and share all your dreams with. This is the beginning, but this is how I feel and I could not be happier.” He looked at her affectionately, not expecting a return sentiment. It was obvious she was gun shy and for a very good reason, though it had not been anything she had opened up about, not yet. He’d wait as long as she needed. He was in no rush, not for this girl. On an island bordering the coast of South Carolina, a convention is planned for "Catch Me" game enthusiasts. But only ten guests are able to arrive before Brian, a category four hurricane, makes landfall. Lois Steinberg washes ashore on the beach. Amongst strangers, she has no idea who to trust and when Paul, the cook, is found murdered, events happen too eerily reminiscent of any "Catch Me" game that Stuart Harrington could ever conceive.

Catch Me if You Can is a very intriguing thriller that will keep you on your toes. Very well written story that Miss Mae wrote here. When I thought I knew who it was she threw another curve ball. Mae kept me guessing until the very end. I really recommend this book to anyone who loves a suspenseful thriller.4/5

The Narration: Stephen Mendel, Dave Mallow, J.W. Terry, Toni Attell and Robin Riker. Five narrators for Catch Me if You Can and it brought the story to life. I loved that there were the different narrators, it was easier to differentiate the characters. However, the sound effects were really neat, but I felt that it was a little distracting and took away from the story. 4/5

I received this audiobook as part of my participation in a blog tour with Audiobookworm Promotions. The tour is being sponsored by Miss Mae. The gifting of this audiobook did not affect my opinion of it.

Interview

Q&A with Producer Roger Rittner

  • How did you first decide to make "enhanced" audiobooks?
    • I've been a big fan of classic radio for many years. I was approached by an audiobook marketer to do some books for him. I saw the opportunity to move audiobooks to a new level - like fully produced radio drama. I decided that's the way I wanted to create a unique experience for listeners.
  • Had you produced radio dramas before?
    • Oh, yes. I created a stage show of classic radio shows recreated live as a theatrical production. It ran for 10 years at a variety theatre in downtown Los Angeles. At the same time, I used my troupe of actors to produce actual drama for radio. We did quite a bit for local National Public Radio stations, plus two audio adaptations of the popular Doc Savage pulp novels and a full-fledged original musical comedy for radio called Charlie Sent Me. Both were broadcast by National Public Radio stations across the U.S.
  • How do you prepare for audiobook production?
    • I take the print book and completely script the entire audio version, indicating where sound effects, background accents, and musical underscores go. That becomes my working blueprint when it comes time to put all the pieces together in the audio edit. It also helps the voice actors to be performing from an actual script, getting them away from the feeling of reading from a book.
  • How do you select the proper actor for each role?
    • Voice acting is a very specialized talent. You have to be able to portray character, emotion, and the environment of the scene through voice dynamics alone. So first and foremost, I select actors who have that kind of experience. Some are professionals, and some are talented amateurs. Of course, they also have to have the voice quality of the character(s) they'll be portraying. Some are very versatile and can play more than one character.
  • What's it like when you record the dialog?
    • Before we start, I work with the actor to set the voice for the character. We may go through quite a few variations of tone, placement, voice quality before we find one that best suits the character. Then when we start recording, I concentrate on pacing and character emotions. I make sure plot points are clear and obvious. Since most of the actors are working alone, I make sure that dialog that is interactive with other characters sounds conversational.
  • How do you select the appropriate music?
    • I work with the book author to decide the tone they wanted to establish for the story. Is it suspenseful, or dramatic, or humorous? There may be sections that are different, but there is usually a single emotive tone overall. Then I go through my music library to find music tracks that have that feeling. But I don't make a final selection until I'm actually editing all the pieces together. Sometimes the feel of a scene is turning out slightly different than the way I originally envisioned it. So I'm sensitive to how the scene is actually playing out in the edit before I select the best piece of music.
  • You must have an enormous library of sound effects. How do you sort through them all?
    • I have them all categorized into about two dozen types of sounds. Mechanicals, weather, human-produced sounds, etc. Also some specific categories like footsteps, creaks and squeaks, and automobiles. Here again, the pacing and "feel" of a scene can influence the particular effects I use.
  • What's the hardest part about the way you create the finished audiobook?
    • Well, I have to work around the actors' schedules, so most often they've recorded their dialog separately. Putting it all together and making it sound like they're all in the scene together takes time. With Catch Me If You Can, there were often six or more characters in a scene together. That's a lot of juggling. I also make sure everything is spacially correct.
  • "Spacially correct"? What's that?
    • I want the story to sound as if it's happening in real space. In a room, or in a jungle, like that. On an audio "stage". So I place the characters on that stage in specific positions, and make sure the dialog and sound effects are coordinated not to break the illusion of their location in that space. If a character moves during a scene, their dialog and accompanying sound effects (like footsteps) move with them. I call it being true to the "geography" of the scene.
  • I understand you offer physical CD sets as well as digital versions. Why's that?
    • I just like the look and feel of a physical package. It sort of establishes the quality of the production. Also, I know there are some people who prefer the permanence of CDs, or who may need CDs for most convenient listening.
  • What's been the most unique book you've done so far?
    • We just finished a wonderful book aimed at middle schoolers called The Case of the Cursed Dodo. It's a throwback to the film noir era, with endangered animals as all the characters. There's lots of action and lots of humor. I saw the potential to make the audio version sound like a 1940s movie serial looks. I think we accomplished it very well.
  • And what's next?
    • Miss Mae's Ahoy, Out There! A charming book for children. Lots of very unique "storybook" characters, in far-flung locations. It'll be fascinating to see how it comes out.

  1. Lois Steinberg - washes ashore the beach of Hanibel Island during a category four hurricane. Who is she? What’s her history? Glimpses are given during flashbacks at various scenes. She finds herself attracted to the man who rescued her, Victor Helm.
  2. Victor Helm - Handsome, flirty, with his own secrets. He suspects there’s more to Lois’s story than what she reveals, and he intends to discover whatever it is.
  3. Jenna Milford - owner of the historic resort where Lois washes ashore. She’d scheduled a ‘Catch Me’ game convention, but Hurricane Brian decided otherwise.
  4. B. J. - guest at the convention, loving grandmother, arrived from Jacksonville just in time before Brian struck.
  5. Tia - another guest. Lovely Asian woman. Maybe has her eye on Victor?
  6. Jared Steele - all brawn, and smug conceit. Just the kind of guy who enjoys taunting Victor.
  7. Pete - another ‘Catch Me’ enthusiast. Or not.
  8. Paul - the cook. Murdered by someone using a southern iron skillet as the choice of weapon. Maybe they didn’t like him using lard in his recipes.
  9. Bob - loud mouthed, intolerable jerk. He didn’t come to make any friends.
  10. Rajah - definitely not one of Bob’s friends.
  11. Cookie - blond, curvy, moral character questionable but tough as nails. Maybe.
  12. Stuart Harrington - New York millionaire, creator of the ‘Catch me’ game series. His purpose at the convention was to award his newest game, “Catch Me If You Can” to one lucky winner.
  13. Mite - Victor’s golden retriever. The game wouldn’t be complete without him.
