“Drift”
Coming November 2013

* Drift (Book #1 in the Drift Series) *

 SYNOPSIS:

When young demon, Leo Cutler, commits treason against Hell for saving a life he was supposed to help end, punishment for his betrayal is on the menu…

Sure to be served cold by his overlord Christian, it’s not for fear of retaliation that makes Leo renounce Hell.

It is because he has fallen in love with the near-victim, a human, Shade Lewis.

Winning his freedom will not be easy, especially when the test involves going through Shade’s murderous ex-boyfriend Darryl Kite, who has now, somehow, become a demon as well.

With Shade’s love compelling Leo forward, will he discover he has the courage to give up an eternal life? Facing the many obstacles that Christian will surely have waiting for him?

Or will it all prove to be too much forcing him back into the confines of Hell?

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Michael Dean was born in Mountain View California in 1976, raised in Tucson Arizona, and now resides just outside of Dallas Texas.

Michael’s adventurous style has led him to start and run a successful small business for the past ten years, as well as writing YA novels and playing music. His passion for music and the pen collided when he was younger, causing him to pick up a guitar and write his own music. That drive led him to starting his own band, getting it played on regional radio stations, even competing in Ozzy Osbourne’s battle for Ozzfest in New York City.

Still just as driven, now he prefers quieter days to himself, thus giving him time to improve on his main passion, writing. Drift, a YA paranormal fantasy, is a bi-product of that alone time. He hopes that when a reader picks up his works, he or she will love it just as much as he did writing it.

About Rick Chiantaretto

1005771_573547986029946_976679398_n

I've often been accused of having done more in my life than the average 30 year old, but if I were completely honest I'd have to tell you my secret: I'm really 392.

So after all this time, I'm a pretty crappy writer.

I have one book published but out of print, one coming out soon, and a bunch half written (when you have eternity, where's the reason to rush?). I've been favorably reviewed by horror greats like Nancy Kilpatrick, and my how-to-write-horror articles have been quoted in scholarly (aka community college freshmen's) papers.

I enjoy the occasional Bloody Mary, although a Bloody Kathy or Susan will suffice. Mostly, I just try to keep a low profile so people don't figure out who I REALLY am.

Book Tour: Changling (Curse of Kin, Book 2) by Ari Harper

Changling
By Ari Harper
Series: Curse of Kin #2
Release Date: October 29, 2013
Publisher: Lycaon Press
Genre: Fantasy, Supernatural, Romance

Synopsis:
Each of the three friends has a place in the curse. This book follows Sully as he finds out more about his history and his skills.

Nera's best friend Sully knows there is something special about him. After all, he is related to her uncle and Jasper is a witch.
Stands to reason that something would have been passed down.
They just have to find what powers Sully has been bestowed with.
But when they do, is it as simple as he thinks?
To be able to change into his animal and run wild is one thing. To be hunted for the beast that he is, is another. And when they find out who wants him dead, they realize that life isn't as simple as they thought.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Ari Harper never wanted to grow up.
To offset the limitations of aging ungracefully, she created her own set of unique worlds where she can be and do whatever she wants.

Gods, witches and demons surround Ari while she spins her magic, doing mainly what they tell her to do. Given a chance, she prefers to work amongst chaos, which is good because she is constantly surrounded by children, all clamoring for attention. Some of them end up in her stories, some of them even get to die grisly deaths or be cast away to another realm. Her favorite pet is a big black dog called Hugo. You will find him as himself in the Curse of Kin series as Nera's faithful hound.

My Thought's:

I received Changling from Itching For Books in return for an honest review. First off I would like to thank both Itching For Books and Ari Harper for giving me the opportunity to not only read and review Changling but the first book in the series Witchling. To start off, Changling is the second book in Ari Harper’s “Curse of Kin” Series.
The first book, “Witchling”, Nera finds that she’s an extremely powerful witch who has to save the world. No pressure there! Yet during all of this Nera is obviously scared but courageous at the same time, which I admire a lot especially after finding out who she really is. She keeps finding new powers in which she must learn to control them all as well as use them at the same time. Imagine how difficult that could be for someone.
Now, Sully, who is Nera’s best friend has also just found out some extremely life changing news. Sully is a shape shifter, which I’ve always found fascinating by the way. While Sully is managing his new life as a shape shifter and learns how to control his new power, Nera and Bones must keep him alive.
Now onto Bones. I’m not quite sure where to start with him, but I really enjoyed his part in the book. Nera and Bones I believe are really good for each other, but in some ways Bones is just way to nice for Nera and he just absolutely adores her. At the same time though I believe that Bones is too good for Nera, but I still think their great together.

Excerpt

I had talked to Drew on three previous occasions over the summer, each time wanting nothing more than to be left alone. Our fourth conversation took place the day I got arrested, and it changed everything.
It was the middle of July and Tropical Storm Andrea was bearing down on the South Carolina coast. Most people were secure in their homes for the day, avoiding the winds and flash flooding, heeding the warnings of local officials.
But to me, those warnings were made to be ignored, especially when the advisories called for waves that would be six to eight feet high.
Surfing is how I find peace. It’s the purest form of escape I've ever known. I had always felt like that, but after what happened to me a couple of months ago, having an escape from everyday life was more critical to my survival than ever.
I had fled from my life a few months ago, leaving Florida and ending up in the Charleston, South Carolina, area. I had escaped in a literal, physical sense, but I still craved the mental escape, and for me there was no better way to do that than riding waves.
The tide was going out—a good thing in any tropical storm or hurricane—and as I walked across the sand toward the water, the incoming waves hurled themselves toward the beach, crashing violently and disintegrating, followed shortly by another, another, another… The waves here on Isle of Palms are sometimes pretty decent and surfing-worthy, but nothing like the ones provided by Tropical Storm Andrea.
I walked into the ocean, feeling the undertow pulling at my ankles, almost urging me to go farther out, an urging I didn't need because I was about to get in some of the best surfing I’d had since arriving here.
Past the first few breakers, I placed my board down on the water, flopped my belly down on it, and began paddling. First straight out, then parallel to the beach, waiting for the wave that would take me back to shore.
I chose my wave, paddling myself into position. My brain switched into what I call Surfing Escape Mode:
I’m on the wave. It’s powerful. Rough. Almost violent. It pushes me. Lifts me.
I’m free.
I have to work to remain free—flexing my leg muscles; using my arms to balance my body; shifting my center mass to stay steady; all of this is work, hard work, but the payoff is being free.
It’s usually over in a matter of seconds like that. But those real-time seconds are long dream-like minutes, and that’s exactly what I desire.
The freedom didn't last long that day, though, because as I trudged through the knee-deep water where the ride ended, I looked up and saw a cop. He stood facing me, a few dozen yards away up on the beach.
I don’t know how long he had been there. Probably just a few minutes. But if he’d been yelling, I hadn't heard it, thanks to the noise of the roiling Atlantic, and the wind. It was mid-afternoon, but the storm made it seem like dusk. Using his flashlight, the cop motioned for me to get out of the water and come toward him.
I had a choice to make: either pick up my board and obey the officer, or ignore him and go back out for one more wave.

Excerpt:

The last time she saw Dillon:

He came to me that same night. I wasn’t sleeping as he tapped on the window in my room. I got up slowly, trying not to wake up Missy in the bed next to mine, but also because of how sore I was.

All my muscles felt like deep bruises reminding me of how they were abused. My neck was just newly scabbed over. It was rough and itchy. I had crescent shaped fingernail marks on my face where Donnie’s hand had been when he was trying to keep me quiet. There were small cuts in little x patterns on my stomach from Donnie’s knife when he’d held me in place. Bothersome mosquito bites burned on my bottom and thighs. The stinging belt marks were swollen on my back, arms and legs, and it ached, like ripping paper, at the apex of my thighs.

I opened the window letting in a healthy breeze that pushed my hair away from my face. The air sounded of crickets and frogs.

He looked so relieved to see me as he stood slightly below the edge of the window. It took him a moment to remember to breathe. I knew I was standing there but I felt like an empty vessel. He smiled at me but I didn’t smile back. He looked worried again and swallowed.

“You look better,” he said as if I was a wounded animal about to bolt. I didn’t respond. “Will you come outside and talk to me, Sadie?”

“What for?” I said, my voice drone-like.

“I just want to help you, darlin’,” he said, softly, but his face looked pained.

“You can’t help now.” My voiced sounded foreign like it belonged to another person I didn’t know.

“I can take you away from here. When I go to college you’ll come, too. Or I’ll get a job right now and buy us a little house.”

“That can’t happen.”

“You’re angry at me,” he said. It wasn’t a question.

“No.” I shook my head.

“This is all my fault,” he said, putting his hand over his stomach in physical pain.

“No,” was all I could say in protest. “Mine,” I said under my breath. I don’t think he heard.

“I’m sorry I touched you, baby.” He put both his hands on the windowsill. “I hadn’t even realized what I did. It was just so natural.”

I know.

“I’m not mad about that, now,” I said. He reached toward me through the window as if he was going to soothe me somehow. I flinched and he stopped.

“I’m sorry,” he apologized again, his eyes wider than I’d ever seen them. I didn’t like to see him that way so I just looked down at the dirt instead.

“Nothin’s changed about how I feel for you. You know that. You’re still my girl, right?” He sounded like he was begging.

“I’m no one’s,” I said. Maybe I meant to say I’m no one.

“Who did this to you?” His voice was hot lava.

“You should go,” I said as I rubbed the lump in my throat and felt the scabs on my neck again. He looked wounded and I felt sad for him through my numbness. This wasn’t his fault. All I kept thinking of were Donnie’s words, “I’ll kill him too.” I needed to let him go, to free him of this obligation he had to the girl I used to be two days before.

“I’m not the girl you loved anymore, not the same at all. She’s gone now.” I looked away from him as if I was looking for where that girl might have gone.
“I’ll wait. Forever if I have to. You’ll get better. I can help.”
“I don’t want you to.”  He deserved better was all I could think. He was so perfect and I was so dirty now. I disgusted myself. “Look, I won’t see you again, Dillon. Just go and live a happy life.”
“I won’t force you, Sadie.” His voice sounded louder now, his fists clenched, with the pain right at the surface. “You’re my best friend. I’ll never love anyone but you!”

His volume caused me to turn and check on Missy. She wiggled from her back onto her side but was still asleep.

I looked back out the window and just shook my head at him. “You shouldn’t say that.” He would move on someday. He would be okay. This was protecting him, too, like throwing rocks at a dog so it wouldn’t come with you and get hurt. He had no idea.

“I have to go,” I said, as I started to close the window. He put his hand out to me but stopped at an imaginary line between us.

“Please, don’t shut me out.”  He was panicked now, his voice like red silk waving in a wind storm. I couldn’t look at him anymore. I had to let him go.

“Goodbye, Dillon,” I said and I slowly shut the window on him. He stood there for a long while, stunned. I was behind the curtain but it was see-through enough so I could watch him illuminated by the moonlight. I wondered if it went both ways if the lights were on in here and it was dark out there.

Suddenly, his knees buckled under him and I heard him cry out as he punched the ground with his fist. The sound made its way through my cloud of emptiness and echoed around like a lone wolf howling in a low holler. That sound will never leave me.

I watched his hunched-over shape silently writhing in pain. His dream of me, of the girl I was and the wife I could have been to him, must have died right then. He was mourning that girl, the one who went into that shed, not the one who came out twenty minutes later.

He could never love her. No one could. No man ever has.
